Creating exhibition assets for the Kashiwa Sato Exhibition
Working as a core member of the planning committee, I was in charge of all visual aspects of the exhibition. I also participated in the discussion of the viewing experience, possible campaigns, and later led a group of interns to further enhance the visual communication for the exhibition.

Overview
The 2020 Kashiwa Sato Exhibition hosted by the National Art Center, Tokyo, made a decision to open up a “Selected Works” exhibition in Shanghai due to the travel restrictions in Japan. With limited time and space, the Shanghai exhibition contained works hand picked by Sato that best represented his wide range of approaches in the last 30 years of being an art director.
While designing, I utilized the existing artwork “LINES”, a visualization of conceptual beauty that does not occur in the natural world, by Kashiwa Sato to create pieces for different situations and environments. It was important to maintain cohesion within pieces of the exhibition, while adapting to different mediums of presentation. I received feedback from lead designers in Kashiwa Sato’s team, and the finalized designs were approved by Sato himself.

Designing Merchandise
When designing merchandise, I explored similar but different compositions with the visual and the text, creating unity between the collection. I also paid special attention to the quality of materials and maintaining the same “red” from different manufactures.

Exhibition Assets
The exhibition assets served the purpose of building brand identity and signage. Through constant observations and interviews with audiences, I was able to make changes to designs and way-finding assets that enhances the viewing experience of the exhibition.

Reflection
This experience was very meaningful as it challenged myself to work as the sole designer of a real life exhibition. It pushed me to efficiently design assets with time constraints, and gather feedback from the audience for further improvements.
